Over the last few weeks, one of the names of Jesus has captivated me. Immanuel. Perhaps it’s because I’ve been reading through an advent book (which I am totally loving). Maybe it’s because it was the name that was used to prophesy the coming saviour, which we celebrate at Christmas. I personally think it’s a beautiful name and it seems to just roll off your tongue. I like the name so much, that it’s my sons’ middle name. This name not only reflects the heart of God, but it is also a promise.
You see Immanuel means, God with us. As I’ve read through portions of scripture that have the name Immanuel in it, I realize that His name brings strength and courage to the weak heart. Joshua 1:9 says, “Have I not commanded you—be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” What a beautiful thought and wonderful promise. To know that the one true God is with me, it causes me to be brave to face the challenges and fears of life. Knowing that He is right by my side looking out for me, protecting me. This makes me feel like a little kid again, holding the hand of my big, overly protective, Italian father. There was a sense of security just standing near my Dad. I remember being carefree as we walked around town together as he held my hand and guided me through the busy city streets and stores. I didn’t have to worry about a thing, except to enjoy the adventure of being together. With my Dad nearby, I knew I had nothing to fear. I knew he would protect me. I knew he would guide me.
I’m reminded of Isaiah 9:6 that gives us a few more names for God. “ And He will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Knowing that God is with us means that we have the best advice giver right by our side. That’s pretty amazing! When I’m in the middle of a scary situation and I need to know what to do, He is there with me, and if I stop to listen, I’ll hear His still, small voice guiding me. When my heart is pounding as I face fears, I can call on Immanuel, God with us, the Prince of Peace. When I call on His name I have found time and time again, that He floods my heart with quietness & peace.
What’s in a name, you ask? Well, in the name of Jesus, there is power. Comfort. Security. Peace. Courage. Fearlessness. Immanuel – God with us.
